Description

Rob Kim’s Tangy Pack provides both HDMI and VGA output for your NTSC Apple IIc, Apple IIc+, or Laser 128. The Tangy Pack comes in an attractive 3D printed case that fully protects the enclosed electronics, and also includes screw terminals to securely fasten the device to your Apple IIc.

The Tangy Pack plugs into the video expansion port of the Apple IIc/IIc+ and is powered from the port itself. It is a scan-doubling device that takes the 560×192 video of the Apple IIc and upscales the video to ~640×480 (720×480 @ 28.63MHz pixel rate), the video resolution supported by most modern video monitors.

The Tangy Pack has three buttons that provide the following functions:

  • Scanline effect: On or Off
  • Color mode: Color, Mono Green, Mono Amber, or Mono White
  • Border: Off, White, Blue, Green

Firmware updates

Now ships with Firmware version 1.10, which includes:

  • A 10-second auto-border to improve syncing
  • A redesigned case to fit both the Apple IIc and Laser 128
  • Laser 128 support, with a few caveats.

WARNING: Always turn the Apple IIc off before attaching or detaching the Tangy Pack. Otherwise, damage to the device and/or to your Apple IIc can occur. It is strongly recommended to lock the screw terminals down to prevent the device from being accidentally disconnected.

Compatibility Warnings

  • Currently only works with NTSC, not PAL.
  • Some monitors have problems detecting or auto sizing the image since the video from the Apple IIc is smaller than the normal 640×480 image. These issues are mainly on the HDMI output, but VGA usually works fine.
  • Some displays will scale and apply image filtering to the input images which will remove the scanline effect and/or stretch the image from its normal 4:3 size.
  • The Tangy Pack will work with many video capture cards but see the compatibility page for details.
  • This device currently does not work with IIc+ that has been accelerated to run faster than the stock 4 MHz IIc+.
